New discovery related to gum disease
ADVERTISEMENT
According to a study by the Academy of General Dentistry in 2002 74% of Americans are affected by some type of periodontal problem such as gingivitis or gum disease. Well, for these 74% of the American population we have some good news. Thanks to a recent study released from the University of Louisville, under the capable hands of David Scott PhD, has found a way to reduce inflammation and some bone loss that are related to gum disease. To make this possible, a way must be found to block the natural pathway of the enzyme GSK3b which is involved in inflammatory signaling. This way has also been discovered. Researchers have discovered that it is possible to block GSKb3 from completing its function by using a specific inhibitor, SB216763, thus stopping inflammation and subsequent bone loss that are often times a result of periodontal diseases.

Once it is determined whether the inhibitor has any side-effects and is given the “OK” to be used, top dentists will be able to help their patients in fighting the disease and prevent excessive damage. Not only will patients suffer from a fewer amount of consequences, but they will also experience much less discomfort. This is something that every dental patient will be happy to hear, but it does not excuse them from not taking the effective preventative measures for avoiding the development of periodontal diseases at the beginning.

Effective ways of making sure that you do not develop any form of periodontal diseases is first by making sure you brush a minimum of twice a day and floss regularly. This helps to remove plaque on and between your teeth. If you smoke, quit, this addiction is also a contributor to periodontal diseases and the cession of this will help you avoid developing gum disease. Also, and most important, make sure you visit your local dentist on a regular basis so that he or she may detect that you are doing everything you need to be doing and if the first signs of any diseases are present in your mouth so that they may be treated early. Your oral health is important, and even with the advancements being made in treating oral health problems, preventing them from ever developing in your mouth is the best way to go about it.
