Erectile Dysfunction linked to Inflamed Gums
ADVERTISEMENT
A recent study published by Turkish researchers in the Journal of Sexual Medicine has a very interesting connection linking sexual performance and dentistry. The study shows that men in their thirties with inflammation of the gums due to periodontal disease are three times more likely to suffer from Erectile Dysfunction (ED). Both of these are caused by similar risk factors in men during their thirties who suffer from certain cardiovascular diseases. According to Dr. Faith Oguz of Inonu University of Malatya, Turkey, these cardiovascular risk factors include aging, smoking, diabetes mellitus and coronary artery disease. Erectile Dysfunction is a problem that affects about 150 million men around the world and approximately 30 million in the United States alone. ED has become a public health problem that many doctors and scientists are trying their best to resolve. This new connection may become a better way of diagnosing the issue earlier on so that a solution may be found to help those whose suffer from ED early on.

Due to the correlation of risk factors the study was conducted and it was found that over half of the men who suffer from Erectile Dysfunction had inflamed gums associated with periodontal disease. This means that if a patient has ED his doctor should be aware of the possible periodontal issues and the bacteria that might therefore be in the patient’s bloodstream. With this higher risk present, it is important that patients in their thirties who have been suffering from ED go and see their local dentists who can easily assess whether there is gum inflammation and bacteria present as well.

These days oral health medicine has started to gain more media attention due to studies such as this one. The correlation between a patient’s body overall health and that of their oral health is significantly high. Making sure that you see a top dentists on a regular basis is very important. It may help resolve previous medical issues that were present as well as stopping new ones from developing due to bad oral health habits. Do not wait until your body’s health has deteriorated. Make sure to see your dentist often.
