For a generation, we have been going to 2412 Plainfield Ave, South Plainfield until recently known as South Plainfield Dental under the able and caring leadership of Howard Mintz, DDS. Recently there has been a dramatic change. It is now Amara Dental. Transitions are often fraught with promise or danger. Unfortunately, unless there is dramatic improvement especially in the billing department, it is time for me to look around for a new dentist– they abound in Edison. In the second week of December 2023, I went in for a minor procedure under a new dentist. The procedure was ably performed. This does not imply a recommendation or a lack thereof. One swallow does not make a spring. My issue is with the accounting procedure of Amara Dental. Even though I carry two dental insurance policies, I received a bill of $322. I received a text advising me to call the billing department if I need clarifications. I called twice. No response. I called up my two insurance companies and they advised me that Amara Dental never called them. Nevertheless, a week later I received a new bill- $111.60. ( One third the original!) Once again an estimate, my insurance companies so advised me! I will advise my readers as to what happens next. Will there be an abatement of incompetence? It will not be easy for me to leave 2412 Plainfield Ave because of the highly competent, caring and gracious dental hygienist, Wendy (I do not know her last name. Why do doctors display their last names, but hygienists do not?) If Amara Dental improves, I shall return. I will keep you posted. Meanwhile as I pass by my erstwhile dentist’s office on the way to my pharmacy and see empty chairs and an empty parking lot, I cannot but sigh as I long for the olden days! Dr. Mervyn C. D’Souza
