What is a Root Canal?

A root canal, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure that repairs a damaged or infected tooth instead of removing it. The goal is to save the tooth's natural structure, relieve pain, and avoid costly restorative treatments.

What can I expect during a Root Canal?

A root canal is a common dental procedure that involves removing inflamed pulp from a tooth, cleaning and disinfecting the inside, and filling the space. The procedure is usually relatively minor and shouldn't be painful, though any discomfort may come from the condition that requires the root canal. Here are some things you can expect during a root canal:

  • Anesthesia Your dentist will numb the infected tooth and nearby gum with a local anesthetic. If you're anxious, they may also give you medication to help you relax, which could make you drowsy.

  • Rubber Dam Your dentist will place a rubber sheet around the tooth to keep it dry and prevent you from swallowing or breathing in any chemicals.

  • Drilling Your dentist will drill a small hole through the tooth's crown to access the pulp, the soft tissue at the center of the tooth.

  • Pulp Removal Your dentist will remove any infected pulp and tooth debris with files and an antiseptic solution.

  • Cleaning and Filling Your dentist will use files to clean out the canals, smooth and reshape them, and then fill and seal them with a biocompatible material.

  • Temporary Filling or Crown Your dentist will place a temporary filling or crown to protect the tooth, and you'll return for a permanent crown in a few days.
